UCA sweeps Southland Baseball Players of the Week Awards again

From UCA:

FRISCO, Texas - Central Arkansas catcher Michael Marietta was named Southland Conference Hitter of the week while teammate, right-handed pitcher Bryce Biggerstaff, earned Pitcher of the week honors, the league office announced Tuesday. It marks the second time this season the Bears swept the weekly awards for baseball

Marietta paced the Bears offense that won three games during the week, which included taking two-of-three from No. 3 Mississippi State over the weekend. The senior from Oak View, Calif. (St. Bonaventure H.S.), went 7-for-15 (.467) with five RBI and four runs scored. Marietta had a run, a hit and RBI in all four games, including two swipes against Grambling in a 10-1 UCA win. He went 3-for-4 in the decisive third game on Sunday, with a run scored an RBI. On Saturday, he belted a ninth-inning homerun off of the Bulldogs closer to force the game into the decisive 10th inning. Marietta is batting .351 on the season and is seventh in the conference in on-base percentage (.474) and is tied for second in runs scored (16). He sits second in the Southland behind teammate Forrestt Allday in RBI (19) and is tied for fourth in total bases (34).

Biggerstaff, who threw a no-hitter Feb. 24 against Jackson State, had another impressive performance Sunday against No. 3 Mississippi State. The junior from Sherwood, Ark. (Central Arkansas Christian H.S.), threw an eight-hit complete game and allowed two runs on three hits in the second inning, but settled down to shut out the potent Bulldog offense until he allowed a solo home run in the ninth inning. Biggerstaff struck out three batters while walking one. The junior is sixth in the Southland in innings pitched (28.0) while sporting a 2.25 ERA and has only walked two batters this year. UCA boasts a 14-2 record and is ranked 30th by both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA.

Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Lamar senior outfielder Darian Johnson, McNeese State junior outfielder Jackson Gooch, Northwestern State senior first baseman/outfielder Will Watson and Stephen F. Austin junior outfielder Ricardo Sanchez. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Lamar junior left-hander Jonathan Dziedzic, Nicholls State senior right-hander Mike Suk and Stephen F. Austin senior right-hander Chase Greening.

Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
