Answering last-minute tax questions

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- With today's tax deadline upon us, many people are hurrying to file their returns on time. Others are trying to figure out a way to pay.

What happens if you don't file on time? What can you do if you need an extension? And where does that money even go?

The deadline arrives.
The forms are postmarked.
The check is written--but if you ever wonder where those taxes go--and how they are dispersed...listen up.

"It's not fun! Nobody likes cutting a check to anybody. But we do think there is good value to what we do. We have fire protection, we have police protection. We have education for kids. We have the ability to invest in roads and highways and technologies. All through our shared resources."

Brett Kincaid is an advisor at Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families. Their goal is to bring more state and federal tax dollars to help better children's futures.

Kincaid says, deciding how to spend Americans' tax money is legislators' biggest task.

Taxes--state and federal--are used for military, social security and public works.

"More than 2/3 of the state dollars that we spend are already spoken for before they go in--for highways, education, public corrections. Everything else has to fight for the rest."

Federally--the majority of taxpayers' dollars go to defense and security. The other large pieces of the pie pay for medicare, medicaid and social security. What remains is discretionary, used in areas such as veterans' affairs and education.

Taxes--like it or not, no matter your status--are part of being an American. Just like having a voice in what your leaders decide.

"Government is made up by the people and people have the ability to try to influence how lawmakers make those decisions and I think that's something that's often lost." says Kincaid.
