Today's Box Office: 'Lockout 'pretty much what it promised | News
I had the pleasure of doing an interview the writer of The Cabin the Woods, Joss Whedon. You may have heard of him before, he's the brains behind beloved fanboy series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly. He's also written and directed a little film called The Avengers. I asked him if he felt that horror films had become formulaic. More on that in a bit but after watching Lockout, I realized that action and horror films have become fairly formulaic.
Lockout takes place in the "near future" and is an action film in which the president's daughter visits an outer space maximum security prison to make sure the prisoners are being treated fairly. As you can guess, the prisoners gain control of the prison and special agent Snow (Guy Pearce) is sent on a mission to rescue her but in the process, he learns that a friend of his who has information he needs is also on the ship so his trip to space takes on a different mission.
It's a fun action movie. I wouldn't put it in the top tier the defining films like Die Hard but it's certainly a good one. It doesn't ask you to believe much and it doesn't ask you to live in an impossible world. Pearce's character Snow is a witty, tough guy who's not overly tough. I would describe his character as a sarcastic, uncaring John McClain. He plays the character really well considering his body of work is drama. If you like action movies that don't ask too much of you and don't require too much thought or involvement then Lockout is for you. I give it 8 stars out of 11.
I had the opportunity to interview Guy Pearce earlier this week. We talked about Lockout, his upcoming project, and the fun of yawning.
As I said before, I also talked with Joss Whedon, the writer and producer of The Cabin in the Woods. When I asked him if horror films had become formulaic, he said "I do think they've become formulaic to an extent but more I was interested in the formula. As a writer I was interested in what it was about me that makes me want to hurt the people that I love and destroy characters and why I love to watch horror movies and the reason why we all do. So it wasn't really so much railing against horror movies as a really fun weird way to explore that desire in me to make or to see really terrifying horror."
The Cabin in the Woods does sound like the stereotypical horror film. It's about a group of friends who go to a remote cabin in the woods and bad things happen. It's not the stereotypical film though.
Also this week, The Three Stooges brings Larry Curly, and Moe to the big screen as the knuckleheads try to save the orphanage where they were raised, become embroiled in a murder plot, and stumble into stardom on a reality TV show.
