CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - Student athletes at the University of Central Arkansas made more than 300 children smile on Sunday by literally helping put shoes on their feet.

It's all part of an international project called Shoes of Hope.

The idea was to bring children in Conway together by washing their feet and then give them a pair of new shoes. But it's also more than that, the focus is spreading compassion through a simple gesture.

The program helped change more than 17,500 lives in 2014. The athletes raised more than $5,000 for the event.

Graham Gibbs works for the international organization called Samaritan's Feet."60 percent of kids K through 12 in Arkansas are either on or eligible for free and reduced lunches," said Gibbs. "So, that's a demographic stat that we use to gauge need."

He further explained, "If they're needing food, they're needing clothes, they're needing shoes. They're needing all that right?"

The assistant athletic director at UCA says the program does a great job getting students out of their comfort zone and teaching them to value the advantages they have.
