Amigo Cup helps UCA reach Latino community
News

CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - The University of Central Arkansas used sports as a way to reach out to the Latino community on Saturday.

UCA along with the Latino Student Association, Arkansas Minority Health Commission and Conway A&P Commission sponsored the 6th Annual Amigo Cup. The soccer tournament was held right on UCA campus at the university's Farris Center. It not only brought together eight youth Latino teams from around the state, but the event allowed parents from the community to see the university as a possible opportunity for their children.

"These are good candidates for the university, and so we want them to not only feel at home, but we also do campus tours, we take them to the different departments, talk about the majors we have, getting where we try to sell the community to them," said UCA Hispanic Outreach Coordinator Manny Supulveda.

Along with the soccer tournament, there was also a Latino Health Fair, two Latino radio stations and Mexican Food Vendors on Saturday. Sepulveda says bringing Hispanics and Latinos to UCA is vital to preparing all students for what he calls a more diverse world.
