UPDATE: Kidnapped child safe, father and grandfather arrested
News

CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) – The 4-year-old girl who was reportedly kidnapped Friday morning has been found safe, according to LaTresha Woodruff with the Conway Police Department; this information comes after an afternoon of changing information in this case.

Late Friday morning, Woodruff said a 4-year-old had been taken from her Conway home by her non-custodial father, Nakia Gibbs, and his father, Johnny Gibbs, earlier that day. A search took place looking for the three people and the vehicle they were believed to be in, a tan Mercury Grand Marquis with Arkansas tag 519 SHM.

At about 3 p.m. Friday, Woodruff told THV11 that the girl had been located at the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office, where both Gibbs men had been arrested.

The information continued to change to say that none of the three Gibbs were located or in custody.

Woodruff said Nakia and Johnny Gibbs went to the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office about 2:00 p.m. to visit their brother/son who was in jail there. Lonoke County Sheriff John Staley said the girl was with the men and went with them inside the jail.

Staley said the Gibbs men were in the jail for about 30 minutes; they signed in to visit their family member, but by time the computer system showed there was a warrant out for their arrest, the men had already left the facility. So, while they were at the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office, they were never in custody.

It is unclear at this time what led to the conflicting information between Lonoke County Sheriff's Office and the Conway Police Department, but Woodruff did confirm there was confusion between the two agencies; they are investigating what led to the lapse in communication.

At 5 p.m. Friday, Woodruff said all three people were in police custody with Arkansas State Police in Forest City. It is not clear where they were located prior to being transported to police custody.

THV11 will continue updating this story with more information.
