Investigation continues of fatal hit-and-run in Wooster

WOOSTER, Ark. (KTHV) - Authorities in Faulkner County are still investigating a fatal hit-and-run of a boy in Wooster.

Michael Fowler, 27, of Springfield was allegedly driving drunk in a Dodge pickup truck with two people inside at the time of the crash on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Garrett Martin, 12. He was driving an ATV at the time of the crash.

"I understand accidents happen but it's always that much worse when it happens to a child. And for those of us who have children it hits pretty hard," says a neighbor Briana Koone. She says she heard the ambulance and other emergency vehicles pass by her house Wednesday evening.

Captain Matt Rice with the Faulkner County Sheriff's Office says Fowler wasn't alone in the truck. In fact, one of his passengers made a frantic call to 911.

Rice says, "The passengers were spoken to last night. They were interviewed last night and were let go last night. I am not giving those details."

Fowler was found in Morrilton and taken into custody by Morrilton police. Rice says this isn't the first time they've had trouble with Fowler.

"He has been in our facility before, several different times for anything from burglary to public intoxication.  We're early-on in the investigation. When you have something of this magnitude and something as tragic as this we want to take our time on it and get everything lined out."'

Thursday afternoon with several details still in question, neighbors know one thing for sure.

Koone says, "My heart goes out to the family of the child and the family of the driver because it's a difficult situation on every level. It's not easy you know and it's going to take a lot of time for them to move on from for them."

According to Faulkner County prosecutor Cody Hiland, Fowler will face charges of negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, both felonies.

Hiland says Fowler is due in court Friday afternoon.
