UCA accounting student awarded $10K scholarship

CONWAY, Ark. — A University of Central Arkansas accounting student has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) for the 2015-2016 academic year.

UCA graduate student Melissa McDowell of Little Rock was one of 84 students from various colleges and universities in the U.S. to be selected for the PCAOB scholarship.

McDowell graduated from UCA in May 2015 with a bachelor of business administration in accounting and is currently pursuing a master of accountancy.

McDowell said that the faculty in the Department of Accounting was contacted to recommend a student for the scholarship.

“I was shocked and honored that they would think so highly of me. I respect my teachers very much and for them to choose me is immensely flattering,” said McDowell.

BA Senior Exhibition scheduled for UCA's Baum Gallery

CONWAY, Ark. — Graduating art students at the University of Central Arkansas will display their work at the annual Fall Senior Exhibit in the Baum Gallery of Fine Art from Nov. 5-Dec. 3.

Opening receptions will be held on Nov. 5 from 4-6 p.m. and Nov. 22 from 2-4 p.m. The receptions and exhibition are free and open to the public.

The 14 art students participating in the senior exhibition will present their strongest works made during their junior and senior years. The students’ art is represented in a variety of media, including graphic design, photography, sculpture, fibers, drawing, painting and printmaking.

Dr. Jeff Young, professor and chair of the UCA Department of Art, said that every senior exhibition was different each year because students bring their own unique styles and experiences to the show.

Rick Springfield Homecoming performance at UCA sold out

CONWAY, Ark. (UCA) - Rick Springfield, the Grammy-winning musician, author and actor, will perform to a sold-out audience in UCA Public Appearances’ homecoming show at Reynolds Performance Hall on October 29.

Springfield has sold more than 25 million records and had 17 Top-40 hits, including “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An Affair of the Heart,” and “I’ve Done Everything for You.”  He won a Grammy in 1981 for Best Male Rock Vocal for his No. 1 hit single “Jessie’s Girl.”

"Rick Springfield’s concert is during Homecoming Week, and our alumni will enjoy this 1980s rock music icon,” director of Public Appearances Amanda Horton said.  “He is a wonderful entertainer with a multifaceted career as an actor, author and musician. Not only will audience members get to hear Rick perform his hits, but they will also hear stories from his amazing life.”

Conway Public Schools observing Arkansas School Bus Safety Week

CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - Starting October 19 until October 23, Conway Schools will join forces with the State of Arkansas to promote School Bus Safety Week.

Every day in the Conway School District, 3,673 students are transported on school buses. Bus drivers cover more than 3,600 total miles each day with parents’ most precious cargo, their children. 

“Safety on our school buses is a top priority,” says Ed Dow, Transportation Supervisor for Conway Public Schools.  “We work year round to make sure we get all our kids to and from school safely each and every day.”

UCA to host Tournées French Film Festival

UCA to host Tournées French Film Festival

CONWAY, Ark. (UCA) - Visit the French-speaking world without leaving central Arkansas through the Tournées French Film Festival at the University of Central Arkansas.

The Tournées French Film Festival is from October 30 to November 13 at the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center on the campus of UCA. An audience discussion with a panel of UCA faculty will follow each film, and refreshments will be served.

All films are free and open to the public, have English subtitles and will begin at 6 p.m.

A special family-friendly screening of the animated film “The King and the Mockingbird” will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 7. Refreshments and interactive games for kids of all ages begin at 5 p.m.

CONWAY—The University of Central Arkansas Office of Student Life, in partnership with the Office of the President, are excited to announce this year’s Family Day festivities.

The event will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 on the football practice field located at the corner of Farris Road and Bruce Street. The entire UCA Community and their families are invited to enjoy this free event!

A variety of free activities, including a picnic lunch, carnival snacks, games, bounce obstacles, pony rides, and other activities for the entire family will be available.

Kickoff for the UCA football game against McNeese State will follow at 6 p.m. on the stripes.

 Purple Cow Milkshake contest to benefit Bethlehem House

CONWAY, Ark. - The Purple Cow in Conway will host its Second Annual 'BrainFREEZE' event Sunday, October 18 on the Green at Hendrix Village.

'BrainFREEZE' is a milkshake drinking competition that willl begin at 2 p.m. and will last until 2 p.m. It will feature three competitive divisions: child, church and celebrity.

Registrants are encouraged to raise the registration fee. Fees for the celebrity division are $250, church division fee is $100, and $50 for children’s division.

Coach Todd Kendrick will be defending his Celebrity Championship Title. Last year, Kendrick drank three pounds and seven ounces of Purple Cow Milkshakes. 

Organizers promise a fun, family adventure with kid-friendly activities including face painting, pumpkin painting, a coloring competition and free balloon animals. All funds raised at the Purple Cow 'BrainFREEZE' will benefit the Bethlehem House, Conway's homeless shelter.
