UCA observes National Campus Safety Awareness Month

CONWAY, Ark. (UCA) - The University of Central Arkansas will observe National Campus Safety Awareness Month in September with weekly events designed to promote safety across the university campus. This is the sixth time the university has observed National Campus Safety Awareness Month.

“Campus safety is everyone’s business and we depend on each and every member of the campus community to take an active role in keeping our campus, and each other, safe,” said UCA Police Chief Larry James. “We are partnering with several departments and student organizations to provide the programming and events during National Campus Safety Awareness Month.”

The UCA Police Department is partnering with the Student Government Association, the UCA Counseling Center, Student Wellness and Development, Student Life, Greek Life, Housing and Residence Life, UCA Athletics and the other departments and student groups to provide programing on issues including sexual assault, the dangers of alcohol and drugs and pedestrian safety.

Theft Prevention Week

Wednesday, September 2 11:30 p.m.-­1:30 p.m.

-­‐Students, faculty, and staff will receive information on how to register valuables in Operation ID and will have the opportunity to register onsite.

• Self-­‐Defense Class-­‐ HPER Thursday, September 3, 8:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.-­‐Students, faculty, and staff will receive information on the meaning of self‐defense and the laws that can protect them. Verbal Judo will be discussed and there will be hands­‐on instruction. Sexual Assault Awarness Week• Stand Up and Speak Out VideoStudent Health Center 307 Tuesday, September 8, 1:40 p.m.-­ 2:30 p.m.-UCAPD is partnering with the UCA Counseling Center to present this 20-minute video that addresses acquaintance rape and is specifically designed for college students. The last half hour, students will be given some hands-on techniques to help protect themselves. • Rape Culture on CampusesIda Waldran Auditorium Wednesday, September 9, 6 p.m.–7 p.m.-­The UCA Counseling Center will have a speaker from the Arkansas Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ACASA) speak on rape culture on college campuses.
